Truth to be told, she hadn't been trying to sneak out. She was just walking around the camp, looking for someone to talk to, when she saw the prisoners coming back from the village. And the guard looked like he was ready to fall asleep on his feet.
Who would pass up such a golden opportunity to sneak out for a while? She was pretty sure she could come back without the guards making a fuss; men tended to be more forgiving towards good-looking, stupid women. All she needed was a few tears and a deceptively dumb look on her face.
After reassuring herself that she wasn't going to get in trouble, Marianne walked through the crowd with a sure stride and quickly hid herself behind a tree. She was quite astonished that it was so simple to sneak out. That guard must have had a very long night. She chuckled quietly at the implications of that sentence. No, his night was most definitely not long in that way.
She looked around one more time for any stray guards and, when it was obvious that she was alone, walked deeper into the forest. Marianne had never been one of those people who were amazed at the beauty of nature, but after spending four months in that camp a little change of scenery was most certainly welcome.
Oh, was that a stream there? She followed the calming sound of water, dodging roots and trunks as she went. And indeed, there was a small stream in a snowy clearing. And it wasn't frozen. Marianne was tempted to jump in that beautiful, fresh, clean stream and wash herself. Showers were sparse in the camp, which made her feel dirty and grimy all the time.
Possibly getting a cold was worth it, she decided. Without bothering to check her surroundings for an intruder, she took off her stained and sweaty clothes, putting them on a tree branch neatly. There wasn't much point in bathing if she had to wear the same dirty clothes after, but what was there to do? She would surely have pneumonia if her clothes got wet as well.
